plaça on the seventh floor? yes this is urban square on the seventh floor.

andorra is very small principality, sovereign state since 1278, squeezed in the narrow gran valira river valley, high in the pyrenees mountains. average hight is 1996 m [6,549 ft]. total surface are is 468 km 2 [181 sq mi]. it is not surprising having in mind all of the above that space is so precious. with a strong will solution is always found. in the centre of the city very complex large building is erected [congess centre, various office space, 7 levels of public parking...]. placa del poble, which by the way, means people's plaza, is on a roof of that structure. approach is just beside the main church [12th century sant esteve church] in same level with the surrounding street [first small photo right] there is one more connection to the space over the bridge from the other street nearby [second photo].

on the other side of the roof you are high above a ground [min 30 m – 100 ft.], that is how steep this hill is. atmosphere on the square is quite charming. view of the surrounding high peaks is making you feel part of the nature, urban ambient with well developed content and infrastructure [few wonderful peaces of public art] is standardly part of the large city life but isolation from motorized traffic and usual urban noise present everywhere else in andorra la vella is really making experience of this placa unique.

just steps away behind above mentioned church is another little plaça hidden in a maze of narrow
streets and a world apart.
