Place de l'Hotel de Ville, Quebec City, Canada, 2013[open in full screen]

  Previous

The public square across from city hall is called Place de l'Hôtel-de-ville and is bordered by three streets: rue De Buade, côte de la Fabrique and rue des Jardins. The public market in Upper Town had been held at this spot since the French Regime.
Up until 1875, farmers from across the region would gather here to sell their wares.

The public square was then known as Grande Place, Grande Place de la Haute Ville and Place du Marché. In 1900, the public square was renamed place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville following the construction of city hall.

The city hall of Québec, officially inaugurated in 1896, was built on the former site of the Jesuit college.

It was also known as place Notre-Dame and place de la Basilique until the middle of the 20th century.

Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec is located at this site since 1647, the cathedral has twice been destroyed, first in 1759 and then again in 1922 by fire.

In 2014 the cathedral celebrated its 350th anniversary. As part of the celebrations the holy door was constructed and opened on December 8, 2013 and remained open until December 28, 2014. It again opened from December 8th, 2015 to November 20th, 2016 for the Year of Mercy after which it was sealed until 2025. The square is within the "Arrondissement historique du Vieux-Québec" (Historic District of Old Quebec), a district that was designated under provincial heritage legislation in 1963 and listed as a World Heritage Site in 1985.

Place de l'Hotel de Ville is the best possible starting point for the stroll thru the city.
