Parque Calixto Garcia, Holguin, Cuba, 2012[open in full screen]

Previous Taina Plaza, Choro de Maitta, Cuba

San Isidoro de Holguín, better known as Holguin was founded in 1545. It is also known as city of squares, and that of course attracted our attention immediately. On the photo bellow left, view from the hill Loma de la Cruz, 6 of the main ones are marked, placed in the straight line between Calle de Maceo and Bulevard Libertad.

Here they are: #01 Los Cabalitos, #02 Parque Infantil, #03 Parque San Jose, #04 Parque Calixto García, #05 Parque Peralto [San Isidoro], and #06 Parque Jose Marti. This one, #04 and next one #05 are in our collection.

Parque Calixto was layed out as a second one in the City in 1720. In the middle is a statue of Major General Calixto Garcia. Close by you can find Centro Provincial de Arte and Bayado, a library, the club Casa de la Trova, the Martí cinema, the Theatre Eddy Suñol and many more.

Most surprising for us after visiting most of the large cities in Cuba was that atmosphere here was much more relaxing, street vendors, numerous cafes and restaurants around, even the usual queues for the fancy stores are making this square quite similar to any other in Latin America.

Open arcades, very convenient in tropical climate, are surrounding the whole square.

Looking to the photos bellow you will see how lucky we were.

We visited Holguin on the day after Christmas, everybody was dressed up and handsome, Holiday spirit was everywhere and, of course, our experience was excitingly pleasant too.
