Masjid-i-Jehan-Numa, commonly known as the Jama Masjid, is one of the largest mosques in India. Its builder is the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, between 1644 and 1656, and inaugurated by its first Imam, Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari. Situated in the Mughal capital of Shahjahanabad (today Old Delhi), it served as the imperial mosque of the Mughal emperors until the demise of the empire in 1857. |
The Jama Masjid was regarded as a symbolic gesture of Islamic power across India, well into the colonial era. It was also a site of political significance during several key periods of British rule. It remains in active use, and is one of Delhi's most iconic sites, closely identified with the ethos of Old Delhi.
Jama Masjid and its courtyard stand on an outcropping more than 30 steps higher than the street, giving the mosque a commanding view of the surrounding area. |
Exactly 50 years ago, on June 1974, Branislav [Bane], me [Sale], Zika and Mika, all students of School of Architecture in Beograd, Yugoslavia, took a 4 months long trip to India. Photos and the map from that life changing experience you can see here=> LINK.
Just bellow the map, you can see photo taken on Jama Masjid Courtyard and one taken on the front steps, in 1974. VR Photographs by dipl. ing. arch. Branislav Kovachevich, Melbourne, Australia, Next Taj Mahal #1, Agra, India ⇢ |
