Campo San Lorenzo, Venezia, Italy, 2007[open in full screen]

  Previous Campiello Barbaro, Venezia, Italy

Along the River dei Greci going north from the wide open space of riva Schiavoni you will find, almost always empty, this nice, sunny square in front of the church of San Lorenzo. It was built around the end of the 13th century.

This church and the bridge in front, from where this panorama was taken, is most famous by the fact that Gentille Belini painted in 1500 one of the most famous paintings of the period called "Miracle of the cross at the bridge of San Lorenzo".

Visible In the distance is Greek orthodox church San Giorgio dei Greci from 16th century. One of many in Venezia with leaning tower.

Tip for visitors: One even more important building is visible from the bridge, one with Italian and the flag of European Union. It is Prefecture di Polizia, where visitors can find help if they are in trouble.
