Plaza Regocijo is a square located in the historic center of the city of Cusco, Peru. It is located a few steps from the famous Plaza de Armas of Cusco and is a popular meeting place for both locals and tourists. The square is named “Regocijo” in honor of the celebrations and festivities that took place there during colonial times.

The Plaza Regocijo, also known as Kusipata in Quechua, has a rich history dating back to the time of the Inca Empire and has been an important place in the social and political life of Cusco throughout the centuries.

During the Inca period, the Plaza Regocijo was known as Kusipata, which means “square of joy” in Quechua. It was a space used for various Inca celebrations and rituals. It is said that it was the place where Inca rulers held ceremonies and festivities to honor the gods and celebrate important events in the empire.

After the arrival of the Spaniards and the foundation of the colonial city of Cusco, the square changed its name to Plaza de Armas Chico and later received the name of Plaza Regocijo. During colonial times, the square became a meeting and recreational space for the Spanish and mestizo population. Social events, bullfights and other recreational activities were held there.

In the 20th century, the Plaza Regocijo witnessed important historical events. It was the scene of demonstrations and protests during the struggle for Peruvian independence in the 19th century. It was also the place where the independence of Cusco was proclaimed in 1821.

Today, the Plaza Regocijo remains a central space in the life of the city of Cusco. It is a meeting place, where locals and tourists gather to relax, enjoy the environment and appreciate the colonial architecture that surrounds it.
