Travessa de Piedade, Lisboa, Portugal, 2017 [open in full screen]

  Previous

Very rarely we have in our collection squares like this one. Travessa da Piedade is small very intimate public space in residential area of Bairro Alto, very close to our favourite Praca das Flores, but much more secluded. It is very well showing us how easy it is to make community pedestrian and neoghbourhood friendly.

This area is urbanized since 17th century and it is obvously planned. It is used exclusively by local residents, or just occasionally as a pedestrian shortcut to the nearby bus stop or stores. It still has all the necessary elements of the cleverly designed public square in a part of the town that is becoming very popular with young generation.   Little bit of greenery is separating the park like area from the traffic, one mature tree for the shade, fixed table with 4 chairs for social activities and few more movable benches when the square is more crowded. Organizing space in few levels is making it even more pleasant.
