Kosancicev Venac, Beograd, Srbija, 2007[open in full screen]

  Previous

The oldest preserved ambient in Beograd are this couple of streets hidden within the remains of the walls of the old Beograd Fortress [blue line on the map is marking the fortress walls]. Map and the photos bellow are reviling its position on the top of the hill near the Saborna [Congregation] Church.

Quite neglected statue of Ivan Kosancic, national hero from the resistance during Turkish occupation in XIV century is visible [small photo bellow].

Streets are paved in old fashion – Turkish cobblestone, very uneven and unfriendly to the cars which is a main reason that heavy traffic is avoiding this area.

Ruins of the National Library of Serbia attacked on purpose and destroyed by Germany in WWII are in this area [photo in the middle bellow].

The entire fund, of 350,000 books, including invaluable medieval manuscripts, was destroyed.

The library also housed collections of Ottoman manuscripts, more than 200 old printed books dating from 15th to 17th centuries, old maps, engravings, works of arts and newspapers, including all the books printed in Serbia and neighbouring countries from 1832 on.

Kosancicev Venac is very popular tourist attraction. It is also popular in the local art circles, lot of well known artists are having their studios in the area and there are few very good galleries around.
