|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Magistratski trg is located in the center of Zemun, parallel to Main Street and bordered by Preradovićeva Street and Gospodska Street. On the square is the building of the Zemun Magistrate [lower-ranking judicial or administrative office], after which the square got its name. The square is closed to traffic and is a pedestrian zone with cafes and restaurants. The magistrate was established in Zemun in 1751. On the square are almost all the buildings of the period, two of which, the Magistrate in Zemun and the House of the Marković family, have been declared cultural monuments. |
Pedestrian area consists of two more Urban Squares, Veliki Trg [Great square] and Masarikov Trg [Masarik Square], and surrounding streets full of restaurant and shops. Area represents a cultural and historical entity of great importance and the backbone of the cultural and social development of Zemun.
Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is on the Great Square. After the conquest of Zemun by the Habsburgs in 1717 and the departure of the Ottoman Empire, around 1721, priests of the Capuchin order came to the town and rebuilt the Catholic parish in 1727. They converted the abandoned mosque into a church. in 1784 old church was demolished, and the foundation stone of the current church building was blessed on August 3, 1785. |
We enjoyed very much walk true this wonderfully restored area.
Our relative introduced us to her friend who is running a cafe on the Magistratski Trg. We have spent pleasant afternoon on the secluded shaded corner of the square, followed by the additional walk over Masarik Square, taken with farmers market in the morning hours, pleasantly empty now [photo in the 4th row bellow]. In the 5th row bellow you can see Great Square and Church of the Assumption. |
