Union Square is known for the equestrian statue of George Washington, unveiled in 1856, the first American equestrian sculpture cast in bronze. Park connected to the square is also hosting numerous other statues including Mahatma Ghandi, Marquis de Lafayette and Abraham Lincoln.

  Historically park has been the start and end point for political demonstrations. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1997, primarily to honor it as the site of the first Labor Day parade.   Union Square and park is also location of the very well known popular Green Market and a starting point for the stroll true Little Italy all the way down south to the water edge.
