this plaza was built in the 1600s to replace the old plaza mayor. careful restoration work has been carried out over recent years to preserve its colonial atmosphere overflown with tropical vegetation. among other famous buildings on this plaza is the “el templete”. resembling a temple, it stands under a ceiba tree considered sacred by all the natives of central america, on the spot where in 1599 the city of san cristobal de la habana was founded.
