this square was laid out in 1681 and enjoyed abrift reign as a most fashionable address in london. it was originally called king square after charles II, whose statue stands in the middle. today square is surrounded by office building and it is rapidly deteriorating. because of it's square configuration, this type of public space originated the name "square" in the english language.
