this open public space near the outer limits of the barbican centre is one of the several within the centre. barbican was one of the most ambitious projects of the post-war period in england. it was open by the queen in 1982, after almost 20 years of planning. during the second world war, the entire area was totally destroyed by bombing. barbican consists of several residential tower-blocks, several arts venues, school of music, museum of london etc. church on this square is st. giles cripplegate, thought to have had its origins at the end of the 11th century. very well developed pedestrian areas, isolated from the busy london streets.
