in the historic centre of amsterdam this large open space is providing quite different atmosphere than the rest of the city with its canals and narrow streets. two most prominent structure on the square are royal palace, perviously city hall, built in 1655 and 15th century nieuwe kerk. other notable buildings are hotel krasnopolsky and department store bijenkorf. national monument to the victims from the second world war and the steps around it, in the center of the space, were in seventies central gathering spot for the young people from all over the world. this square together with the picadilly circus in london is having special meaning and importance for me. this was first major world urban square [back in 1969] that I had experience with, and its historic, welcoming, friendly, unforgettable street life left permanent impact in my future development.
