zocalo [main square] or parque francisco canton, is typical latin-american spanish influenced square. park is in the middle and major church on the perimeter. cathedral de san gervasio was built around 1550 from the stone taken from the destroyed maya monuments. town was called zaci by maya people still making approximately 85% of population in state of yucatan. in order to keep connection with the maya religion and their main god cuculcan [plumed serpent] snake like ornaments are incorporated above the main entrance and elsewhere.

few other buildings from colonial times are still standing in the surrounding streets: palacio municipal and hotel "el meson del marqués". atmosphere in the park itself is very lively, full with maya women in their national costumes – buipiles, still made and sold by them here. interesting painted sculpture of the maya women in the middle of the wonderfully restored fountain is completing the picture.
