this space was originally build and used as ceremonial court yard by the entrance to the court, palácio nacional de sintra, best preserved palace in portugal and continouosly built and rebuilt beetween 1415 and the 19th century.

1910 palace was converted to national monument–museum and this space was ever since used as a public square.
