this lively square is the center of the modern city and the starting point of las ramblas, the most famous street in barcelona. plaça de catalunya is a large, open space, decorated with trees and fountains, a wonderful meeting spot. it is also surrounded by many department stores, banks and hotels. underneath it is a large tourist information center, and the metro station catalunya, a major connecting point.
