this very unusual square is actually memorial plaza built over the burial ground of the defenders during the siege of barcelona in 1714. it prominently features a memorial to the fallen catalans of the war, with a torch of eternal flame. every 11th of september catalan history is celebrated here. it is squeezed next to the monumental church of santa maria del mar fine example of catalan gothic architecture from 1328. two other public squares are connected to this square.

on one side is plaça de santa maria with the main entrance to the church [also former cemetery] and on the other very popular local hanging spot, passeig del born [first photo right]. wall along the street leading to the born is additional sitting space, very valuable feature for this very popular area [used by us many times, we were usually to late for more attractive sitting spots on del born or elsewhere].
surrounding very old buildings [some even from the 15th century] are accommodating very attractive bars and restaurants [for those we were not late – small phots right].
