numerous urban renewal projects are scattered all over barcelona and one of the best is placa dels angels. two major contemporary buildings are defining this space. first is museu d'art contemporani de barcelona (MACBA) designed in 1995 by richard meier, eye catching white structure based on best experiences of masters of modern architecture, particularly le corbusier [first photo right]. the other one, contemporary culture centre (CCCB), designed by pinon, viaplana, mercade, architects, combining new structure with the older is prime example of what could be done in a well designed public urban space in order to create new cohesion points in the city [second photo right]. arch. a. viaplana [CCCB design] is also principal architect of another amazing urban renewal project: plaça lesseps.

third complex is gothic convent del angels chapel from the 15th century, peu de la creu, only renaissance chapel in barcelona. it was constructed from 1568 to 1569 and the structure designed in 1980 to connect and reinforce this two religious objects is completing the square. this third complex is part of the (MACBA) and accommodates temporary exhibitions.
modern structures are dominating the space but people are also part of the renewed square ambient. skaters are present in large numbers, even in the hottest days of summer, with attractive performances. surrounding residential buildings and in-between open space are enriched with murals, spontaneous [quite attractive] graffiti and few other peaces of urban art. I like this space specially the view "above" from the MACBA cafe terrace[third photo right].
