everything is special in this place. including this square [trg]. famous director emir kusturica [winner of two palme'd or on cannes film festival] was filming his new movie "life is miracle" in this area, near mokra gora, zlatibor, when he spotted that this hilltop [it was covered with very old plum trees] is almost always in sunshine even when rest of the area is clouded. he fell in love with the spot and shortly after converted his movie set to his new home. next, with the help of locals and friends he moved around 20 abandoned authentic wooden houses from the area to the hill and town [drvengrad - made out of wood!] was born.
now there is a functional orthodox church - st. sava, two restaurants with wonderful localy grown food, bakery, gallery, souvenir shop, bank, swimming pool, jail, but also a fully functional cinema, called "underground" [after his famous movie] and of course it is underground. thera are also several houndred of houses some of them avilable for rent. in 1927 railway line connecting serbia with adriatic sea was constructed true this almost impenetrable hills but it was abandoned in 1970. short portion is revitalized and used as tourist attraction. rest of the wood used for the railroad was used to built this town. just pay attention to details and there are so many of them. flower pots, public well, fences, waste baskets, urban furniture, billboards, public washroom. some very clever people are adding more houses to the town, taking good care not to disturb a beauty and the vistas of the area under protection of the UNESCO.
emir kusturica is the winner of the philippe rotthier european architecture award for this project. the prize is awarded every three years by the brussels foundation for architecture.
trg [square] is a main public space in the town and one of the best and most unusual squares I have visited anywhere.
