at the beginning of the 20th century belgrade was getting ready for the "new age". this square was intended to be a starting point for the new monumental business center. it was close to the very popular small market on the banks of river sava and newly built [1890] railway station. largest and best city hotel "bristol" [still standing] was built and during next couple of years few more impressive structures in neoclassic style with direct influence and interest of the serbian king at the time.

unfortunately future was not sympathetic to this space. popularity of car and truck transportation over time converted this whole area to the main trough traffic artery and bus and truck depot. buildings were neglected and poor lighting and proximity of the railway station contributed to the very bed reputation for the whole area. intended usage is recently recognized, truck and bus traffic was directed elsewhere, some facades are renewed and with more light and maybe some street treatment bright future might be visible on horizon.
