on the corner 11th and bleecker streets this quite unique and extremely pleasant space is having its users, playing chess even this late [2am] on the warm september night.

it is in the hearth of historic greenwich village. it’s known history dates back to the 16th century, when it was a marshland called sapokanikan by native americans. the village at the turn of the 20th century was quaintly picturesque and ethnically diverse.

by the 1950s it become the center for the "beat movement", with galleries along 8th street, coffee houses on macdougal street, and storefront theaters on bleecker street. it is designated in 1969 as a contiguous greenwich village historic district that protected more than 2,035 structures and encompassed one-third of the village.

on the small photo is famous fence erected during the closure of lower manhattan after 9/11 attack [in close vicinity]. friends and relatives were posting their massages there and they are now transferred on ceramic tiles and posted permanently on this spot.
